People can’t get enough of bubble tea (a.k.a. boba), perhaps due to the addictively chewy texture of the tapioca balls, the creaminess of the milky tea, or the simple pleasure of inserting the straw into the sealed plastic top.

A Brief History of Boba Tea

The origins of boba culture, which emerged in the late 1980s, are debatable. Due to the widespread tradition of drinking tea in East Asia, milk tea was already well-known in Taiwan. At that time, tapioca balls and shaved ice were both common sweets. Someone at some point came up with the idea to blend three well-liked ingredients into one drink: tapioca balls on the bottom, then a layer of shaved ice, and milk tea to make up the remainder.

Interesting fact: The tea became known as boba, which is a slang term for breasts in Chinese (referring to the spherical shape of the tapioca balls).

As boba became more popular throughout Taiwan, it evolved. Stall owners began offering fruit boba, replacing actual fruit (which was too expensive and went bad quickly) with fruit powders and syrups. In addition to tapioca balls, other topping options were added like grass jelly, almond jelly, egg pudding, and red beans. Even in traditional boba, non-dairy creamer was substituted for milk in the milk tea, and as a result, the beverage gained a reputation for having an exceptionally sweet, creamy flavor.
